Welcome to Whitman College! I am so excited to get to meet all of the new and returning Whitmanites. This will be my fifth year as Head of Whitman, and I am looking to all of you to help me figure out how I can best support you in your living and learning at Princeton. Whitman’s great and experienced staff will join me in making Whitman a happy, friendly, and welcoming home away from home. We will learn quickly together. Here’s a bit about me: I was born in Salzburg, Austria, and finished all my schooling there. After falling in love with math early in elementary school, I earned my Masters in Physics and my Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. A year of post-doctoral research brought me to New Jersey’s Bell Laboratories; after seven years there, I joined Princeton’s Electrical and Computer Engineering department. My research group’s focus is experimental semiconductor devices, especially lasers and small photonic systems. I have an active research group including a very good number of undergraduate students, including during the summer. I have been an adviser to first-year B.S.E. students for many years, and my favorite classes to teach are first-year classes, especially on the foundations of engineering. I am looking forward to getting to know each one of you; please come join me for lunch or dinner in the dining hall. I will do the same. If I’m not around Whitman or the ECE department, you can find me volunteering around the wider Princeton community; if you’ve got a Saturday morning with nothing else to do, please come along!
